TRAUMA INFORMED LEGAL ADVOCACY
My years at Kids Company placed me within an innovative and unique multidisciplinary environment, which crucially exposed me to a direct practical understanding of neurobiology, attachment theory and trauma-informed working in the context of the maltreated child. I learnt how vital such an approach is with respect to solutions for maltreated children and young people. By not replicating the shallow and siloed approach that the bureaucratic social care world offers, it meant that we could view the fragmented world of the traumatised child as a whole. With the focus being on the best outcome for the child, no individual worker had professional dominance, so we arrived at integrated, holistic solutions. It was here I learnt and practised interdisciplinary therapeutic legal advocacy and trauma-informed system design.
Having over a decade of advocacy and service design experience in multiple settings and jurisdictions I have embarked on interdisciplinary doctoral research, investigating trauma-informed practice within the youth justice system of England and Wales with a focus on the concepts of intersectionality and equity.
